Must Do's for Outdoor Enthusiasts
You don't have to go far outside Atlanta to enjoy yourself outside. The greater Atlanta area offers many possibilities for the outdoor enthusiast.
Popular excursions include:
- Hiking
- Whitewater rafting
- Camping
- Canoeing
- Mountain biking
- Kayaking
- Horseback riding
Atlanta Rocks
You can try out some new sports adventures around Atlanta. Rock climb freely, or use a harness and ropes to descend from cliffs at nearby Boat Rock, located just outside the city. By visiting other great climbing routes in Tallulah Gorge State Park in northern Georgia, or at Mount Yonah or Currahee Mountain, you can discover how much Atlanta rocks.
Atlanta also offers caving and spelunking for the daring explorer. Start with sites located around Johnson's Crook, Pigeon Mountain, and Fox Mountain. Local chapters of cave explorers can provide updated information about cave openings and closings.
GeoCaching Georgia
Geocaching is a recent addition to Georgia's array of available open-air activities. It's a large-scale scavenger hunt, using GPS equipment, testing your navigation skills as you seek out marked boxes hidden in the wilderness. Geocaching has become increasingly popular with Atlanta outdoor enthusiasts.
The Great Outdoors
At Callaway Gardens, a park near Atlanta, you can enjoy famous golf, fishing, tennis, and gardens with exotic plants. Nearby Lake Lanier offers a variety of water sports, hiking trails, and an equestrian center. Stone Mountain Park, one of the Atlanta area's main tourist attractions, is home to three separate hiking trails that vary in difficulty. So when you come to Atlanta, we'll see you outside!
