Mission Statement
UCLA's core mission can be expressed in just three words: education, research, service. In an essay on the Research University published Oct. 9, 2001, UCLA Chancellor Albert Carnesale noted the inter-related nature of these three fundamental activities: Like other research universities, UCLA's mission is threefold: education, research, and service. Because these components are synergistic, our contribution to society is one in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. On our campus, education, research, and service are not mutually exclusive categories. The same people are engaged in all three activities, and all three endeavors thrive. The 1974-78 University of California Academic Plan expands upon the meaning of the three-part mission: The distinctive mission of the University of California is to serve society as a center of higher learning. . .Providing long-term societal benefits through transmitting advanced knowledge, discovering new knowledge, and functioning as an active, working repository of organized knowledge. That obligation...includes undergraduate education, graduate and professional education, research and other kinds of public service...School Characteristics
