Guide to Boston: Festivals & Events

Looking for college life on the move in Boston? You're in luck--there's plenty to do in Beantown! Here are a few must-see events about town.

Independence Day: Party for a Week

While the rest of America celebrates the Fourth of July with backyard barbecues, beer, and some light explosives, Bostonians party for almost a week, with street festivals and fireworks aplenty to mark the occasion. Called Harborfest, this weeklong festival around the fourth sponsors a free concert series called Boston Pops. The city also holds Chowderfest around this time.

Saint Patrick's Day: Celebrating Boston's Irish Heritage

In Boston, with its rich Irish history, St. Patrick's Day is one of the biggest celebrations of the year. For one day in March, the whole city goes green and the Irish are kissed all 'round. South Boston is said to hold the city's largest St. Patrick's Day parade.

The Boston Marathon: Test Your Limits

One of the biggest events in Boston is the famous Boston Marathon, sponsored by the Boston Athletic Association. Since 1897, the event has brought thousands of runners and fans to the city. The Boston Marathon was the first to include women finishers, (though they had to hide in the bushes to compete). It was also the first marathon to sponsor a wheelchair division. The race is of Olympic standard, and well worth a look-see.

If you thought that Boston's options for entertainment were limited to Red Sox games, concerts, and fine dining--think again. While rich in everyday fun, Boston, with its myriad festivals and celebrations, offers yearly and seasonal amusement well worth the wait.
