Guide to Dallas: The Sports Report
Cheer and Jeer Dallas’s Professional Sports Teams
There could hardly be a better place to live for sports fans than the Dallas Fort Worth metro area. Five major league sports teams make their homes in and around Dallas. For football fans, there are the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL. Baseball and basketball fans have the Rangers and the Mavericks, and hockey fans aren't left out with the NHL Stars. There is even a soccer team: FC Dallas, which makes its home in Dallas' Cotton Bowl. In fact, the Cotton Bowl, which was first opened in 1932, was selected in 1994 as one of only six arenas for World Cup soccer games in the U.S.
Dallas' professional baseball team, the Rangers, makes their home at the Ameriquest Field in Arlington, TX--just outside Dallas. The Dallas Mavericks are based at the American Airlines Center, located in Victory Park. In 2006, Dallas basketball fans rallied behind their team as the Mavericks made it to the NBA Finals for the first time since the team was formed. The arena is also home to the Stars, and also serves as a venue for concerts..
College Rivalries: The Red River Shootout
College football is also big in Dallas. Every year the University of Texas Longhorns face off against the University of Oklahoma Sooners for what has long been known as the Red River Shootout. This is usually a big conference game as well, and since 1945 one or both teams have been ranked in the top 25 teams in the country.
Whether it is basketball, baseball, or football, any big sports fan will find the Dallas metro area a non-stop source of sports action
