Guide to Detroit: Outdoor Living

Break Away from Urban Detroit

Detroit metro area will not disappoint students who love spending time in the outdoors. With over 400 lakes in the area immediately surrounding the city, those who have an affinity for water sports won't run out of places to spend time boating, fishing, or kayaking. The Detroit area also offers hiking trails with which the buzz of the city can easily be escaped. Backpackers will be happy to learn that Michigan is home to the North Country Trail which runs a total of 875 miles through the state.

Detroit’s Year-Round Outdoor Living

In winter the Detroit metro area is often subject to lake-effect weather, which can blanket the state of Michigan with heavy snow for much of the time. While some might see an opportunity to bundle up in front of a roaring fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate, for others the Michigan winters make for excellent cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
