Guide to Detroit: Lifestyle and Quality of Life
Live and Learn in Detroit
Life in the Detroit metropolitan area is good, according to its residents. In 2001 the University of Michigan conducted a study of Detroit metro residents and found that over 80% of the people polled are happy with their lives as a whole. The city offers diverse employment opportunities and the sprawling suburbs of the city proper offer many choices for housing.
Recreational opportunities are widely varied and the arts are alive in The Motor City. The Michigan Opera Theatre, for example, not only offers some of the best opera performances to be seen anywhere but has also created an outreach program that enriches the lives of almost 100,000 men, women, and children annually.
Detroit Rocks Arts & Culture
The city center is home to the Detroit Institute of Arts, home of some of the most highly-regarded collections in the world. Any music lover is guaranteed to enjoy a visit to the Motown Museum, located in the New Center district, and the former headquarters of Motown Records founded by Berry Gordy, Jr. The Henry Ford Museum outside the city proper pays tribute to the city's automotive history and Royal Oak's Detroit Zoo provides the opportunity to get to know over 286 animal species.
Purchased from the Chippewa and Ottawa nations, Belle Isle is located just two miles from downtown Detroit. Visitors and residents can explore over 1,000 acres of landscaped city park there. And Detroit offers even more entertainment for people of all ages and interests--from fine dining, to the hustle of the nightclub scene, to the roar of the football stadium, those considering Detroit as a new home won't be disappointed in their entertainment options.
