Guide to Detroit: The Sports Report

Students can Cheer and Jeer in Detroit

Sports fans will quickly find that the Detroit metro area with its several major sports franchises makes an excellent home. Students who love major league baseball can cheer on the Detroit Tigers, one of five ball teams in the central division of the American League, at Comerica Park. For football fans, the Detroit Lions, originally from Ohio, supply the roar of the battlefield and thrilling games year after year. The Detroit Lions make their home at Ford Field, an indoor park across the street from the Tigers' Comerica Park. Although Ford Field is an indoor park, its ceiling is primarily glass and allows more natural light into the park than other indoor fields.

More Detroit Sports: Basketball, Hockey and Beyond…

The Palace of Auburn Hills, just over thirty miles from downtown Detroit, is the home of the Detroit Pistons, the area's NBA team. Detroit's basketball fans have enjoyed many great seasons, and in 2004 took the last of their many championship titles.

However, sports fans aren't limited to baseball, football, and basketball in the Detroit area. The city is also home to the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League. The Red Wings are one of the top U.S. Hockey teams, have won a total of ten Stanley Cups, and have been selling out home games for years. They make their home in the Joe Louis Arena located at 600 Civic Center Drive in Detroit.

Any sports lover would be happy to call the Detroit area home, regardless of sports preference--and there is always a game on. The city even has a women's basketball team: The Detroit Shock, the first WNBA expansion team to win a championship.
