Guide to Philadelphia: Festivals and Events
Philadelphia Events Showcase Rich Diversity
Spring in Philadelphia means the beginning of festival season. Brotherly Love at the Painted Bride Art Center explores the beginnings of hip-hop music in Philadelphia, race relations, and social justice. Film festivals include offerings from Jewish history, lesbian and gay communities, anthropology and archaeology (including a respectable collection of Egyptian artifacts and films on King Tut and others), and efforts from film students at Temple University.
Music in the City of Brotherly Love
Musical events to attend run the gamut from folk festivals to opera to women in music. The StringNation festival explores acoustic music from guitars, violins, mandolins and banjos. The Rosenbach Museum and Library hosts an annual garden party, offering visitors to enjoy cocktails and hors d'ouvres in the splendor of Philly in spring's full bloom.
Dance, Theater and Beyond
If you are visiting Philadelphia in a season less kind than spring, there are plenty of indoor events as well. Three dance companies are based in Philadelphia: the Next Move Series which features both domestic and international troupes, the Pennsylvania Ballet, and the Philadelphia Dance Company. Each of these dance options is unique. The ballet puts on a very special production of the Nutcracker every year at Christmas, while Philadanco blends modern dance and routines or techniques from different cultures for shows that are one of a kind. Productions such as Henry V, the Velveteen Rabbit, Chicago and Glengarry Glen Ross make appearances on stages around Philadelphia, ensuring that theatergoers do not go unentertained.
