Guide to Philadelphia: Nightlife and Entertainment

Philadelphia Reeling in Film Festivals

Philadelphia is a special place for film--both as a set and a backdrop--and a great place to see new and exciting motion pictures. The International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival takes place in July, showcasing films (usually from independent directors and producers) that address the roles of gender and sexuality in our society. The Philadelphia Festival of World Cinema attracts features in many languages and styles to its twelve-day event. You can catch it in May at theaters around the city. One theater that stands out from all the others is the Bridge in University City, which offers moviegoers extraordinary service. You can recline in special seats, enjoy films on plasma screens, and order wifi access so you can check your email during the previews. It makes going to the movies a luxury!

Music: The Sound of Brotherly Love

In addition to film, Philly is an important place for musical festivals as well. The Mellon Jazz Festival runs through the year at several dates and times around the city, bringing live acts to jazz, blues and bluegrass fans. Since 1962 the Philadelphia Folk Festival has been held in August at a farm outside of the city. Legendary folk performers including Joan Baez and Taj Mahal have graced the festival, which attracts huge audiences.

Philly's Best Bars and Clubs

Bars and clubs in Philadelphia cater to all tastes. There's the upscale Library Lounge which allows patrons to enjoy cigars in leather armchairs next to a crackling fire. Across town, wildly different Woody's--a well-known gay bar--hosts country line dancing some nights and club anthems on others, making it a destination for dancers of all orientations.
