Guide to San Francisco: Festivals & Events
Get a Little Culture in San Francisco
If you're seeking confirmation of San Francisco's extraordinarily diverse population, look no further than a listing of Bay Area festivals and events.
Asian cultures are celebrated with Chinatown's Autumn Moon Festival held on the 15th day of the eighth moon, as well as the world-famous Chinese New Year Parade. But you'll also find events fêting Japanese culture, such as Japantown's Cherry Blossom Festival and the Nihonmachi Street Fair. The Aloha Festival salutes Pacific Islanders, Fiesta Filipina commemorates Philippine's Independence Day, and the Asian Heritage Street Festival offers the granddaddy of all Bay Area pan-Asian celebrations.
Festivals representing Latin America are featured as well, with an annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration, a Chilean Cultural Festival, and a Viva Las Americas! gala honoring the Hispanic heritage of area Mexicans, Central and South Americans. San Francisco's Carnaval Festival and Parade is California's largest multi-cultural celebration showcasing Latin American and Caribbean cultures. Other ethnic festivities include the Norway Day Festival, the Italian Heritage Parade, Oktoberfest by the Bay, and the Himalayan Fair, a celebration of the mountain cultures of Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Mongolia.
Film Festivals, Parades and More…
Silver-screen celebrations abound in the Bay Area, many reflecting the region's diverse population mix, such as the Jewish Film Festival, the Asian-American Film Festival, the San Francisco Black Film Festival, and the San Francisco International Film Festival. Other big-screen events include the Ocean Film Festival and the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival, which showcases lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender-themed movies and documentaries.
Speaking of LGBT, the legendary San Francisco LGBT Pride Celebration and Parade is entering its 37th year, with a mission “to educate the World, commemorate our heritage, celebrate our culture, and liberate our people.†This two-day event draws thousands to the city and features staple events like Dykes on Bikes and entertainment venues such as the Trans Stage and the Homo Hip-Hop stage.
Themed Events Take the Cake
The Bay Area offers too many other festivals to mention by name, each uniquely centered on particular food or beverage themes, musical genres, arts and crafts offerings, or geographical locations. In addition, the area offers participatory events, such as the San Francisco Illegal Soapbox Society's Halloween Derby. So named because of its lack of affiliation with any official soapbox derby group, the only rule in this race is that all vehicles must contain beer holders. Another event to get involved in is the 7.5 mile Bay to Breakers Foot Race. This annual attraction draws up to 10,000 participants  some clad in costume, some clad in nothing at all.
These festivals and events reinforce the image of the Bay Area as a place where you can pursue your individual happiness in an atmosphere of liberty and justice for all.
