Pro Sports Have a Home in Washington D.C.

For sports fans, Washington, D.C. is a city to with a lot to offer. Home to seven professional sports teams and semi-professional teams in virtually every other sport, D.C. has a tradition of athletic greatness.

Washington's baseball team, the Nationals, was relocated from Montreal in 2005 and play in RFK Stadium. The Redskins, a member of the National Football League, are the wealthiest and most profitable sports team in the US over the past decade, ranking first in attendance per game. The Redskins currently play at FedExField in suburban Maryland.

D.C. Beyond the Pigskin

The Verizon Center in Chinatown is the home venue for Washington, D.C.'s hockey and basketball franchises and is also a major site for WWE professional wrestling. The Capitals, D.C.'s hockey squad, have had a faithful following in the metropolitan area since 1974. The Washington Wizards, a member of the National Basketball Association, and the Georgetown Hoyas basketball team are both local favorites. In the WNBA Washington is represented by the Mystics, one of the league's first expansion franchises.

D.C. United is perhaps the most successful sports franchise in the city. A member of Major League Soccer, D.C. United holds a league-high four championships. In fact, Washington, D.C. is considered the most avid soccer market in the country.

Among the lesser known teams in D.C., are a Major League Lacrosse Team, an Arena Football team, a rugby union, and a popular cricket league. Fans from a wide variety of athletic interests will find a team to cheer for in the nation's capitol.
