Nicknamed the "Mile-High City" due to its high altitude, Denver was founded in the late nineteenth century during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. Since then, the city's population has grown rapidly, reaching more than 550,000 in 2006. The Rocky Mountains immediately to the city's west provide excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation, particularly skiing in the winter months.
