Iowa Colleges and Universities

Located near the geographic center of the nation, Iowa is a farming state with abundant lakes and rivers offering fishing, boating, camping, and other outdoor recreational opportunities. The largest Iowa cities--Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, and Sioux City--offer students and visitors alike rich options for recreation and nightlife. The large college towns of Ames and Iowa City attract students the world over.

The oldest school in the state, The University of Iowa, was founded in Iowa City in 1855. Students also flock to Ames, home of Iowa State University. In addition to its 19 state-supported public institutions of higher education, Iowa is also host to more than 45 private colleges and universities that offer a technical, spiritual, or vocational focus in learning to the students in the Hawkeye State.
