With its pristine coastline, brooding forests, quaint seaport towns, and proximity to world-class skiing, the state of Maine is a popular destination for college students. Neighbored by Canada and the American New England states, rugged Maine is home to public colleges and 15 private institutions. The seaport city of Portland, with its population of nearly 64,000, is the state's largest city.
The riverfront town of Orono, settled in 1774, is the home of the University of Maine, founded in 1865. The University offers undergraduate and post-graduate education at its colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Education, Business Administration, Natural Resources, and Engineering. Other popular Maine colleges and universities include the University of Southern Maine (in Portland), Lewiston's Bates College, Bowdoin College, located in Brunswick; and Waterville's Colby College.
