Syracuse is the locus of central New York's cultural, economic, and educational life. "The Hill" is home to many Syracuse colleges and universities. Syracuse University, a private university, is the city's preeminent research institution and a major local employer. Syracuse is also home to two state-supported public schools, the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and the SUNY Upstate Medical University. In addition, Syracuse students can choose from an array of technical and career preparation colleges.
