Colleges by Religious Affiliations

Since its founding, one of the hallmarks of the United States has been an emphasis on religious freedom. One of the fruits of this is the wonderful diversity of religious choice available in this country. Today, we can see that freedom reflected in the wide array of religious colleges and universities throughout the country.

Religious Colleges: A Diverse Selection

Along with the schools affiliated with denominations profiled elsewhere, there are a variety of other religious colleges and universities to choose from, for members of other religions. Some examples:

  • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon). Founded in the 19th century, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, or Mormon Church, has grown to include 13 million members.
  • The Episcopal Church. A subset of the Anglican Church, the Episcopal Church has between two and three million members.
  • Judaism. There are more than five million Jews in North America, more than in any other continent.
  • Islam (Muslim). Though often associated with the Middle East, Islam has spread throughout the world and there are now over five million Muslims in North America.
